St. Alphonsus, founder of the Redemptorist Missionaries, dreamed of evangelizing in Africa and Asia. In his letters, written to the members of the Congregation, he showed this interest and motivated the missionary zeal that might lead them to these missionary regions.
The first Redemptorists in Mozambique came from Argentina in 2002. They established the first community in Muvamba and later another in Xipamanine, on the outskirts of the capital, Maputo. The members of these communities were: Fr. Alfredo Reyna, Fr. Luis Marcelo Contreras, Fr. José Luis Portillo, Fr. Jorge Luis Rearte, Fr. Ernesto Bernardo Steeman, Fr. Santiago Pablo Eugenio.
